The people of Canterbury need information about services. You can be part of
getting it to them. We are creating a map of the damage, based on eye
witness reports. Feel free to take a look at http://eq.org.nz. If you click
on some of the red dots, you get a good idea. We need people who can read
and filter the incoming messages.
Additionally, we would love for people to read situation reports coming in
and adding reports.
Volunteers need to be computer literate and sensible.
The site centralises status reports from emails, txt messages to 5627,
Twitter & web submissions. We are attempting to build together about 20
volunteers tonight to receive training on categorising incoming messages &
plot them on the map.
We have made some good connections:
- Catalyst IT is providing a dozen staff
- Telecom, Vodafone NZ & 2 degrees are providing messages to 5627 for free
- Google Sydney staff are contributing
- Student Volunteer Army volunteers will be adding to the map & using it as
a ticketing system as they start their clean up efforts
- CrisisCommons.org (France/ Switzerland) is providing assistance when
we're asleep
- Koordinates is providing hosting & staff
VUW's Comp Sci department is providing a computer lab from 4:30pm tonight
until the end of the weekend for use for the response. We hope to have about
5 people helping between 8am - 10pm until the end of the weekend.
We would love to give a group training for people who are available as a
group at around 5pm. Sorry about the short notice.
People can email ***@gmail.com to express interest in either attending
tonight's training session or helping remotely. It's a web application - so
if anyone has the Internet they can help Canterbury.
