KDE networking

At the weekend installfest, one issue we were trying to deal with was trying to
get a standard KDE installation to connect to a configured VPN connection.
This highlighted an issue I experienced on another standard KDE installation I
was asked to look at recently & why I don't use KDE myself (besides the obvious
performance hit)

How does one initiate a connection to a configured connection such as a WiFi AP
or VPN?
The obvious answer would seem "to simply click it", but this does not work (nor
are there any right-click options available).
This seems to be a deal-breaker for any newly-converted laymen users waning to
try out the "pretty" free/libre OS.

I've also not been able to find any decent guides available online that address
there issues I can forward to said new recruits.

Any help would be appreciated

Cheers

- Jaco
