I have seen several attempts over the years, as well as many suggestions
(some on this list) for online databases of linux-compatible gear. Most
founder because the opening task (creating the list) is huge and maintenance
is even huger (is that a word?).
I see now that canonical is having a go. Hopefully someone with their
resources should be able to make a go of it.
