does anyone here have experience with software which seamlessly
integrates a mailing list and a forum?

i know about nabble, which syncs with mailman, but would like something
floss and self-hosted.

cheers,

I believe these forums operate as mailing list and forum at the same
tiome (ie you can post on the forum and it goes to the list and vice
versa) - maybe you could ask an admin there:

http://groupserver.org/ (GPL), which is written by and powers
http://onlinegroups.net/ , an NZ company of nice people.

Truly seamless -- every user can have multiple email addresses, every
"post" is a first-class forum entry and email, sensible things happen
when you email an attachment -- it gets stripped and uploaded to the
Files repository, etc. etc.

Python/Zope sitting on Postfix. Been production stable for about 5 years now.

I've not used it myself but Mail2Forum http://mail2forum.com/ was supposed
to be able to do this for the phpBB bulletin board.

I'm not sure of the current state of the extension, the production one is
for phpBB 2 and the phpBB 3 version has been in Alpha since 2007
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=70&t=603719 against which the
most recent alpha was released in Febuary this year.

That's for incoming. There's some discussion of outgoing at
http://www.phpbb.com/community/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=709655

Another option might be to set up a network news (nntp) server as per the
old usenet protocol. There's about 20 squillion add-ons for nntp including
read by email, post by email (pyg has both) I'm sure you can find something
that makes reading news look like a forum post, if not
http://pnews.urdada.net/ (Last updated 2007) could be a start.
