I have just upgraded to 11.04 and everything went very smoothly. All seems
to working as before and I am learning the new way of working. But, and
isn't there always a but, when left unattended for a while the screen saver
which does start and run okay if left for too long locks up and no amount of
clicking or typing will restore action to my computer.

Has anyone else found this and if so do you have a recommended fix please?

Damian

Are you or have you employed the use of compiz-fusion? Did you install
fusion-icon or make any process that automatically enables compositing?
If yes, uninstall/disable this and then try it.

Could your computer be suspending after a long while, too? Does the
screensaver effect freeze, or is it happily chugging along?

What's the power light doing when it appears frozen?

damn you, compiz!

I was hoping to finally get rid of that resource-hog: it's nice in the beginning, but get real tired really quickly.

On earlier versions I've made use of xcompmgr (a lightweight compositing manager) for the *basic* functionality of compositing that I actually use: a bit of transparency for my terminals so that I can stack them & keep an eye on several at a time.

Unfortunately compiz seems tightly-bound to unity (or rather, should I say, unity is a function of compiz: http://twit.tv/floss166), so removing compiz removes unity too.

I've been using http://www.linuxmint.com/ lately instead of Ubuntu and
it's a nice alternative -- a lot of the helpful lower layer Ubuntu
stuff w/out the "sorry, you were being too productive we're going to
rearrange the furniture, oh, and you need to buy new gear now also"

you might be better off testing for the list-id than the subject-line.
for this list, it's this (check the full headers):

List-Id: NZLUG Mailing List <nzlug.linux.net.nz>

personally i'd use that - it's more 'correct' in my opinion, and it
will ensure edge-cases get filtered correctly

Thanks,

It didn't work anyway, but I'll remember your advice if I can get sieve to filter anything. :-)
Turned back on client side filtering in the meantime.

I find local delivery using procmail to be a simple solution. However,
finding a mail client for android that checks folders for new mail...
that's another kettle of fish!

I'm fairly sure you can ask k9mail to.

This reminds me of issues I used to have in earlier (k)ubuntu versions -
caused by video drivers. So, maybe nothing to do with the screen saver
as such. Updating to the latest drivers either via the built-in tool
(preferably) or downloading from nvidia and installing myself typically
solved the problem (though often only until the next kernel update). Do
you still get an unresponsive system after a similar period of time if
the screen saver is disabled?

Cheers,
Roger

Is it switching the screen off when it does so? Is the computer actually
locking up, or just not turning the screen back on? (for example, to
capslock and numlock still toggle their appropriate lights?) Does
telling it to not turn off the screen do anything useful?

Is there a specific animation as part of the screensaver? Does the
animation keep running? Have you tried setting it to just blank?

yes, I've encountered this, and there is a bug for it (which I can't find right
now)

Unfortunately the fix is real icky.

What has happened is that the screensaver still has the focus of the keyboard
and mouse, but not displayed. The fix I have goes something like this:

> Ctrl-Alt-F1
> [login]
> killall -9 compiz gnome-screensaver
> unity --replace
> Ctrl-Alt-F7/F8 and wait 15 seconds

Works (generally).

Tim
