The Waikato Linux Users Group have a meeting in one week from today:

----------------------------------------------------------------------
!!! Why should you care about Debian?

Debian "Squeeze" Pizza Party!

On February 6th, 2011 after 2 years of development effort a new stable version of the Debian GNU/Linux OS was released. Those of you who know, know this is a reason to celebrate. Those of you who would like to learn more about why this is a momentous occasion should come along and check out what the new 6.0 version codenamed "Squeeze" has to offer. There are a heap of new features and interesting aspects to this release, a demo of how easy it is to install and use, and a presentation/overview of the Debian Project will be presented.

Pizza and refreshments will be provided, come join us in the celebration!

Meeting Room at University of Waikato TBA 7pm, Monday 21st Feb (we will not be having our regular meeting on the 28th this month).

2 years? Surely Lenny hasn't been around that long, has it? I'm still on
5.0, haven't even seen a 5.1 yet.

But if anyone can point me at a website that explains (reasonably briefly)
what's new about 6.0, I'd like to take a look.

I was half kidding. I see the latest was 5.0.7.

Thanks. Hmmm, guess I'd better think about upgrading then. But no hurry.
I'm sure I've got a spare partition somewhere.

You've probably got a good two years or so before wheeze comes out.
Upgrading two releases at a time is fairly annoying (assuming you do
in-place upgrades) so as long as you get round to it before then you
should be ok ;)

I ran several upgrades of servers over the weekend, and about the only
issue I hit was php 5.3 deprecating a few functions resulting in
warnings being dumped out to screen. The postgres 8.3 to 8.4 upgrade is
handled pretty well, as is the slapd upgrade. Can't speak for desktop
upgrades though.

Well, actually I usually 'upgrade' by doing a complete new install off the
DVD's, in a new partition. Then if (when) it's all working fine, I just
copy over all my settings and switch to booting from that one. My data
almost all lives on other partitions anyway.

This is partly influenced by the fact I was on dial-up until recently so
updating from the Internet wasn't a practical option, I used to do everything
off the DVD's. I suppose now I've got ADSL I might reconsider that
approach. Either upgrade in place or (if I'm feeling cautious) copy my
entire system to a new partition and upgrade on that (in case I break
something).

Hi all,

I'm an AuckLUGger and I couldn't make it to any of the meets this
month, so was wondering is it alright if I come down to Hamilton
tomorrow to get my monthly dose of FLOSS medicine? Thanks!

Regards,
Shiv
