Please excuse the cross-post

Some OpenOffice.org community members have announced a split from Oracle.
Looks like an idealogical difference - not completely unexpected. Full
announcement here:
http://www.openoffice.org/servlets/ReadMsg?list=announce&msgNo=429
http://www.documentfoundation.org/

The list of members looks light on the core devs, most of the core devs being
employed by Oracle.

What I find interesting is the backing from Google. I may be completely
uncharitable in thinking of this as part of an effort to spike Oracle's
guns.

The two are fighting in very similar spaces - Open Office vs. Google
docs. Apparently there has been some effort expended into integrating
Go Open Office into Google docs (which Ubuntu appears to have taken
out) but Google taking a hand in things could be a very good thing -
especially for collaborative works (which is something I'm finding I'm
using more and more these days).
