I only heard about this today, but Dennis Ritchie, inventor of the C
programming language & co-inventor of the Unix operating system has died.

His influence on today's operating software is large.

Linux, MacOS, GNU and the BSD operating systems are written in C and
direct descendants of the Unix design and API, while many other other
operating systems in use today, including Windows, were heavily influenced
by Unix.

Windows is largely written in C, and C++ (Originally C With Objects) is used
as the basis of other operating systems such as Nokia's Symbian.

Thank you Dennis.

Before hedied I was hoping that there might be a sudden upsurge of interest
around his post-unix OS Plan9 "From user space". From what I recall Plan9 does
away with the need for a super user, makes the file system layout user-specific
and is generally less main-frame centric than Unix.

"Mainframe centric"?

Cheers,
