OpenSuSE Upgrade misadventures: Anybody got KAddressBook 4.7 to work?

After giving up on the flawed OpenSuSE 11.4upgrade to 12.1 I did a clean
install but retained my /home directory tree.
The OpenSuSE 11.4 to 12.1 Kmail/Kontact migration to the "new & Improved?"
4.7 versions turned out to be long, frustrating and ultimately futile.
this seems to be a common experience
I gave up and created a new "clean" home directory to eliminate any "legacy"
configuration settings.
I loaded an archive of my my /home (from before upgrading attempts ) onto
a spare OpenSuSE 11.4 system and then successfully archived all mail
folders which then "Imported" onto the new Kmail system. Calendar and
"ToDo list" were saved from the old system and after some fiddling were
also installed and viewable on the new Version 4.7.2 Kontact.
Efforts to transfer KAddressBook addresses has been a total failure.
Whatever I've tried so far none of the addresses show up.
- Copied ~/.kde4/share/apps/kabc/std.vcf to the new system - Nothing shows.
- In Contacts tried "File -> New -> New Contact -> Added manual item =>
Nothing shows
- Tried clicking on the email address of an email to add it to the address
book - nothing shows.
- Verified ownerships and permissions of all Kontact files - All are correct
- In Old AddressBook File -> Export -> (Tried vCard(s), csv, GMX etcetera)
then tried import in new Kontact => Import runs but still nothing shows up.
- Played with akonadiconsole -- Pointers seem to be correct
- Searched internet - Lots of similar problems and lots of suggestions but
with an extremely low useful signal to noise ratio.

Any insightful ideas gratefully received
Neil

Hope this one reaches its destination. Thunderbird is giving me grief
with my multiple identities and different email addresses ... :-(

@list admin: sorry for the inconvenience, wasn't intended.

I've been through similar tortures when upgrading Ubuntu to Oneiric. The
culprit is not the distribution (I dread SuSE, but in this case they're
just "riding out" the KDE flaw). The problem is (A) the kmail -> kmail2
migration tool which errors out, and (B) shortcomings in the
functionality of managing resources with kmail2/akonadi. I've had to
suffer email losses (well, they're backed up, but in the process it lost
mail in the current setup), which sucks big time. I've tried several
approaches to hand-migrate, which worked, but in the end also caused
other troubles with all of a sudden mail duplication (and huge increases
in mail size in the duplicates), mail loss, and other annoyances.

Below you'll find some URLs to stuff that helped me do the job and
understand the problem. However, as stated, I've given up on the current
kmail(2) and am using Thunderbird until things are going to be better.
I've heard from other sources that the upcoming KDE 4.8 is also not
supposed to have any improvements in stock for the kmail/akonadi issue
... :(

Thanks for the URLs.
Archiving email folders one by one from a pre-Upgrade copy of
my home on an earlier OpenSuSE 11.4 system then restoring into
a clean new home on SuSE 12.1 means I have a fully working
Email and Calendar but I am still stuck with that empty
KAddressBook. I've tried various suggestions I've found on
the web on how to transfer address book entries but none
have produced a visable addressbook on Kontact Version 4.7.2
The addresses appear to import according to counts but
nothing shows up in KAddressBook. I have tried adding a
dummy Address entry but that does not result in an entry
so manual re-entry isn't a work-around either.

As I said before - Any usable suggestions/work arounds welcome
Neil
