Discussion:
Elections and FLOSS

Hi everyone, I was surprised to discover FLOSS appearing in
Labour's election platform. The Greens mention it too, but I
couldn't find any reference on the National website. Anyone have
any knowledge where they stand on the matter?

Labour's discussion was pretty lengthy, including these two
highlights:

Require that when the government pays for software to be created,
it will be owned by the government, and will be shared within
government and with the public using an open source license.

Require agencies considering new technology purchases over $2
million to first evaluate whether existing publicly available
technology substantially meets their business requirements,
and the cost of changing their processes to adapt to the
existing technology.

The Greens were much briefer:

Free, Open Source software is a great way of making
technology available to as many New Zealanders as possible,
and helps us to help ourselves, rather than being stuck with
what huge multinationals have to offer.

There has been a semi-extensive discussion re FLOSS & ICT-policies in
general on the NZOSS list, not just the points raised by Labour or the
Greens (but talking from a personal bias, I'm very encouraged by the
cooperation between Ms.Curran & Mr.Hughes)

Labour will introduce a bill within 90 days of taking office to remove
from the Copyright Act
the ability to introduce account suspension for infringing file sharing
as a remedy the District
Court can impose.
