a nice explanation of why free software in general can be beneficial too

I'm fairly involved in this at the moment, it is quite large.

The important URL* is http://www.koha-community.org and if anyone wants
to have a play, I have Debian Squeeze packages made for the
almost-about-to-be-released version:
http://wiki.koha-community.org/wiki/Debian
This gets updated whenever I see the git tree is updated.

Keep in mind that this isn't just a web-based alternative to Alexandria
or some other collection manager, it's designed to run an entire library
top-to-bottom.

Oh, and here: http://www.kohacon10.org.nz/ is where you can register for
KohaCon 2010 in Wellington :)

Now go tell all the librarians you know who hate the featureless,
horrendously expensive, uncustomisable proprietary library system that
they're currently using that they should be trying this out :)

(* koha.org has been co-opted by a large-ish US company that does a
pretty good job of failing to understand an open-source ecosystem, so
don't go there.)

Robin alludes to what is a rather interesting sub-plot in the story of
Koha -- how open source projects can prevent or work around attempted
hijackings by commercial interests that don't know or care that not
everything or everyone has a US dollars price.

(I'm a little bit surprised at how anti-american I've become lately.)
