Finally! Now to go install openSUSE on my laptop and shove GNOME 3 on it.
Better than Ubuntu Unity will ever be.

Thanks for the heads-up! I knew GNOME3 was due sometime this week, didn't
know it was out already!

Btw, does anyone know of a GNOME3 PPA for Maverick/derivatives? From what
I've been reading, only Natty PPAs are available so far.

Regards,
Shiv

I find flamebait like this unhelpful.

When I talk to most people within FOSS and in ICT more generally, they're
generally very much inclined to say "use the tool that's most appropriate".
However, when it comes to the GUI- people become different. When projects
attempt to innovate (or stabilise) the project's maintainers are called
crazy, clones or both. Unity is built to remove an emergent problem that
vertical pixel space is decreasing. The aspect ratios of most mobile
computers, such as netbooks, notebooks and tablets, are such that they are
strongly landscape. Unity is one approach to make the most of that form
factor.

Use other tools if they feel more natural. But, don't put people and
projects down because they don't see the world the same way you do.

I've been an early adopter and testing Fedora 15 since the Alpha RCs,
and I have had no problems with the UI, though I do think the default
themes will be tweaked a lot.

The stock one that F15 is using with it's single very fat title bar
takes up WAY too much space, especially given the other comments on lack
of vertical space.
I prefer themes that make title bars minimal, on the thin side rather,
because I want to focus on the app, not how the ugly titlebar stands
out.

Thankfully people have been working on GNOME Shell themes already, so
I suspect now the stable release is done, we won't have the default
theme around for long :)

On the other usability side of things, I do admit it took me a some
time browsing around to discover the new features, and where settings
were, or weren't any more. But the arrangement still feels more logical,
and easier to discover, than Windows Vista/7.

Overall, I like the change in GNOME 3

Dagan
