Hello everybody,

I am pretty new in New Zealand, and I am looking for the best ISP
around. It is mainly for personal use ( a cheap connection will be great
! ), but I like having my own servers at home, updating CVS during the
night, etc. ( like most geek I spend about 24h connected ;-p ).

That's why I would like to hear about your experience with many ISP in NZ.

Oh and by the way I don't mind the modem, I think I will buy some wired
& wireless switch & broadband modem combo if I can find one, but if you
guys around here have some advise, thank you anyway ;-)

Many thanks for your feedback on NZ ISP ;-)

I use ihug and they have been great - it took 2 weeks to get the modem though
but they gave me the first month free when I queried it.
The call centre is slow but I have only had to call once. Other than that they
are sweeeeet

I use Maxnet for my ISP, and access a VTUN for my home server IP
address. They're not a major Linux shop, but they do acknowledge the
existence of "other" operating systems. It's been trouble-free for a
while - except the NZ Telecom side of things, which can't be helped in
my area yet.

Welcome to New Zealand!

I use Orcon Internet http://www.orcon.net.nz and despite my initial
teething problems getting things set up, they've been pretty good.

Solid connection, reasonable speeds (and cheap!)
$49.95 a month and 256k down
No usage limits or excess charges

I guess if you ask, everyone will have different opinions, but thats life.

Oh and if you're buying a dsl modem/router/whatever, make sure you
don't touch any Dlink gear ;)

I have a Netgear DG834G (4port switch, 802.11g and dsl modem / router)
and it works flawlessly, but shop around for a deal :)

HTH!

Maxnet for the ISP - they are very willing to go into bat with Telecom
(may even take some joy) and are keen to offer assistance when the
client is a little more technical than usual.

Billion for the router - they connect very quickly and seem to cope with
dodgy / long lines very well, and there is a combined wireless / ADSL
device. I prefer to bring the connection in through a single port 7100S
to a (Linux) firewall, and do the rest from there.

I use Orcon as well, they are cheap, and crappy at times, but they do
have uncapped DSL so you get what you pay for.

For a router I use a DSE XH1169 - seems to work rock solid and has all
the usual jazz - works rock solid, unlike the cheap Puretek one I had
before...
DSE have a good reputation at being Linux-friendly and they do make
firmware updates from time to time:)

Rene

From what I've found when looking for an ADSL provider (just because I'm
currently looking as I went back to dial-up after I stopped using Woosh and
simply haven't had the money after getting back from overseas to connect up
again) - Orcon seems to mentioned quite often. Slingshot, although having
okay prices are not the best for service (rather they don't provide any real
service). From what I've heard about Maxnet is nothing but positive. Pretty
much the same pricing as Slingshot and Orcon but with a nice piece of
honesty on their site - in that they will do some bandwidth shaping, which
as I understand is pretty standard on our ISP's - it's just that few
actually openly talk about it. As for the router, a few people working for
ISP's (not xtra or ihug) have highly recommended DSE ADSL routers. Not sure
how much I respect their opinions though as I barely know one of them and
the other is subject to easy swaying.
