Hi All,

Can anyone recommend a VPS provider in NZ that supplies Ubuntu Server
hosts? My current provider does Debian NOT Ubuntu.

I would like to use MS Project on my Netbook so either I reformat this
system to Dual Boot Win/Ubuntu again or I install a Virtualisation
package. Anyone recommend a good Ubuntu-friendly package that can
provide a WinXP or 7 host?

TIA, Ben.

sitehost.co.nz offers a choice of os - debian, ubuntu and some others
(perhaps centos?)

their support is pretty good, all queries i've made have been answered
within a few hours, usually in less than one.

they offer $30 a month for the basic vps, which i've been using for 12
months+. their service is good in my opinin, and only has the occasional
downtime - say an hour or two every 6 months.

for $30, you get 5GB disk, unlimited NZ internet, 10GB international
internet, 384MB RAM and an unknown slice of a cpu

kvm/kvm-qemu + libvirt - i used this for a uni project that required
nvivo and ms sql server. it was very good, quite stable and easy to
setup/control

no faffing around with special kernels or complicated driver setup - it
worked straight out of the (natty) repositories

A second recommendation for Rimuhosting, I've hosted a couple of VPSes
with them and they're excellent. Quick turnaround on support issues and
very knowledgable staff.

For virtualisation - http://www.virtualbox.org/ It works well with WinXP
and Win7 on Ubuntu or the other way around.

Cheers

We use SiteHost (not VPS) and can vouch for their service as being top
notch.

Do any NZ providers allow scripted provisioning of servers? One thing that I
quite like about EC2 is that I can use Fabric[0] to provision a new machine
when I want to roll out a new version. "Upgrading" the application then
means changing DNS records, so no down time.

I'm not sure about the scriptability, but Where's My Server do that kind of
thing I think.

Well, my first reaction to that is they're a sensible provider... in a
server environment, it's my seeling that Ubuntu has somewhat lost the
plot, and debian squeeze is newer than LTS anyway.

However, Brett has beaten me with his Net24 suggestion ( I don't work
there, but do seem to be looking after quite some number of VPSes at
their premises ). Prices still pretty keen too...

For virtualization on your netbook ( really a netbook? may not be
powerful enoughto run it? ), then the best desktop product is probably
virtualbox. Get a copy before it gets too Ellisoned...

It always surprises me when people seem to dismiss a netbook. I played
half life almost all of the way through using Virtual Box on a
netbook. They're surprisingly powerful machines (with Linux)
considering that their emphasis seems to be cloud based services.

Hi Nevyn,

Hope all is well with you and yours. My Netbook salutes you and thanks
you for your support, with it's 94% of 1.66ghz and 80% of 2gb available
while running Conky, Gnome, FF (5 tabs), Thunderbird, Document Viewer
and Rythymbox!

To second this: I recently bought an HP Mini with a dual core Intel
processor, and I put 2 GB of RAM in it, and as far as I'm concerned it
goes like stink. When I want a big screen, I plug it into a large
monitor, and otherwise it's just a tiny portable zippy workstation. It
certainly has the processing grunt to run a VM at an acceptable speed
while the host OS has a mail client and a browser going.

I'm running Linux Mint with Xmonad. It's a beautiful combination at
this point, the nice parts of Ubuntu's Gnome with a tiling window
manager. I haven't even logged out of this session in about a month.
That's how happy I am with this current setup.
