Is there a regulatory body for hosting providers in NZ?

One of my hosting providers (hostingdirect) failed to renew a .org domain, despite recieiving payment on time. Not only did they not renew it, but they neglected to let me know this, and the first thing i know about it is when the domain has passed the 45 day grace period, the domain goes down, and hostingdirect are demanding $80 to release the domain from redemption. They blame their supplier (netregistry), but netregistry's side of the story seems more convincing to me, that hostingdirect simply failed to renew it on time.

Does NZ possess any kind of oversight for these cowboy operators? This is not the first time that hostingdirects cavalier service has cost me, indeed very much a case of pay peanuts get monkeys.

If it was a .nz then you'd have more luck, but the only recourse you really have is going through the disputes tribunal as a standard contract dispute - you paid for service you didn't receive. The disputes tribunal is only $20, just figure out how much it's worth to you, then switch hosting providers.
