Any preferred choices for a voip app for my HTC desire? I figure it's
a way of having an extra line for the office.

Sipdroid is probably the most common and a lot of other apps are based
on it.

It has an issue with early media meaning it doesn't work quite right
with some SIP servers but other than that works okay.

If it was an Open phone running Linux you'd be able to run your
favourite VoIP app, right? :) Spent a while chasing Skype (not supported
except by carrier gateways) and Jabber/XMPP (couldn't find a free client
that didn't need a rooted Android) and gave up. Went back to my N900
which is really Linux and supports all of the above without rooting.

Umm kinda weird you saying you want skype AND an open platform!!

I know little about jabber. I have a 2talk account and it works well
with sipdroid!

I want an open platform. I need Skype. There is a difference between
want/need, and different reasoning behind both requirements.

Thanks, I'll look into that.

I'm using IM+ at the moment, as it's the best I've found so far (support for
multiple accounts & protocols), but still really don't like it either myself
(lacks that fully-integrated feel to it).
Ideally I'm looking for something like Pidgin for Android, but anything like
that's still a long way off.

Is there no way to run X apps on Androids?

Without wishing to seem smug, pidgin, xchat etc. run on the N900.

no smugness perceived.
yea, it is possible to run X on android
(http://hackaday.com/2009/02/22/x11-on-android/), but it's ugly (but still great
as proof-of-concept). There are a number VNC clients available too.

Both may be mobile OS's in the portable sense, but I see MeeGo/MobLin/Maemo as
"desktop" OS's capable of running on mobile hardware, whereas I see Android as
a mobile OS capable of running on desktops in much the same way iOS works (& by
desktops I include netbooks, notebooks & tablets).

I still have an "old" HTC Hero, so it may be an entirely different story with
the more current models, like the Desire or Galaxy Tab

I tend to agree. The N900 is much more of a pocket laptop with GSM than
a smartphone. It runs OOo FFS!

at least that means you can run the synergy client, which will not be available
for the 'droid for some time, unfortunately :(

It works nicely on my HTC Desire, I haven't noticed too much battery
drain and also haven't tried it over the 3g network yet, but it
apparently works.

Have a look at Beem [1], it's still quite basic (only does IM for now on
one account), but it is FOSS (GPLv3), so there's hope that it will
support voice in the future.

Cheers,

Rob

I've used Beem (thanks for the suggestion; 2nd choice after IM+), but the
multi-account, multi-protocol & 'droid UI integration is crucial.
Ideally I'd like to use my 'droid as a comprehensive comms device, for the same
accounts & protocols I use & test in Pidgin.

I've had a look at a few others too, but many clients require you to register
your accounts with an online service & then use their client to connect.
Less than ideal to say the least.

For XMPP I use Meebo. It happily connects directly to my own XMPP
server - does not require a Meebo account (I don't have one and don't
want one). It supports other protocols as well, but I only use it with
XMPP.

Sometimes I look at my phone and find that Meebo is no longer running
- this seems to be associated with the phone losing internet
connectivity, but it has not happened often enough for me to care.
Mostly it works pretty well (having at least one conversation a day on
it), so I've not bothered to look for other IM clients for a while. Am
using it on Nexus 1, running FroYo.

I connect to SIP (FreeSwitch & Asterisk) VoIP servers

I've settled on SipDroid for now, as it gives me the best quality & stability
out of the crop, but another you could consider is LinPhone (not bad at all
either).
aSIP & 3CX were OK. I'm looking into CSipSimple at present.
There is a new player on the scene, RedPhone, that provides added crypto.
There is also now a native skype client for the droid, but I find it sucks up my
battery too quickly.
