unison sync problems

i have a setup as follow, for backing up my uni work remotely:
an ubuntu laptop, running natty, fully patched
an ubuntu server, running lucid, also fully patched

until recently, unison worked great to back up the data from laptop to
server. i upgraded from maverick to natty 2 weeks ago, and since then i
can't get the sync to work.

the version of unison on the laptop hasn't changed due to the most
recent upgrade and both server and laptop are running the same version
(i manually upgraded the server to version 2.32 when i started using
maverick on my laptop as there was a clash between 2.27 on the server
and 2.32 on the laptop).

when i try to sync, it shows a dialogue 'connecting to server', which
sits for as long as i leave it. it doesn't fail per se, but neither does
it get anywhere, so i assume it is forming a connection of some sort,
but not doing anything with it

i have re-created the unison preference file for this sync operation
and that produced the same results

syncing from lapotp to usb flash drive still works fine

syncing to my phone (openmoko running debian 6) via network does not
work either, same result

any ideas?

cheers,

Smells like network problems. Run wireshark to see where it's stuck.

Hi,

This link gives some background:

http://www.pclinuxos.com/forum/index.php?topic=86809.0

This one gives a solution:

http://linuxphilia.blogspot.com/2011/01/setting-up-public-key-authentication.html

I've had to do this myself on 11.04, and now all is well with unison.

hmm, thanks for the links, although that's not really solving the
problem. i've considered public keys in the past, but can't afford the
time to set them up

It takes about 10 minutes, and makes everything terribly convenient.

well, how odd. apparently the command-line client works fine. the gtk
client still fails though. the both use the same settings and the same
preference file, so i'm confused now
