Sluggish NZ Server

Since the start of the week my updates from the NZ server have been very
slow - almost down to dial-up speed.

I have switched to the Main Server with some increase in download speed.

The NZ server is the only 'sluggish' site I've dealt with so far this
week.

No, the nice people at Telecom have not throttled me because I am well
within my data cap.

MY OS is Ubuntu 10.10 fully updated.

Anyone else experience this slow download from the NZ Server?

If it's just me, can anyone suggest why? Or where I might search for a
solution.

On the assumption that you're talking about system patches... no. But
then I'm on voda. Even the upcoming 11.04 patches are coming down at
between 600 and 700 KB/sec from http://nz.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/

You could always be contrary and try
http://nz2.archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/ which is on voda, rather than
citylink.

Bear in mind that a lot of the countries infrastructure did get get a
bit bent last week... so your location may have something to do about it
- although I'm in Christchurch.

There's probably a simple reason -
nz.archive.ubuntu.com is on Citylinks network[1]. They provide it at high
speed across the WIX but if your ISP don't peer there (and Telecom dont)
then you're sharing a relatively small pipe that services those ISPs who
dont free-peer.

You may well find other sources work better for you as theyre not subject
to the same pipe size limit.

Check the list of NZ sources and do a traceroute to each, it'll give you a
feel for whih is going to perform the best.

Mark.
