Browsing for a business class/slightly rugged laptop, it looks like all of
the EliteBook range can be purchased without Windows[0].

We purchased one (HP elitebook) from http://www.laptop.co.nz/ about a
year ago. They said they would be able to supply w/out OS and give
$100 off but there was a 1 month wait time.

Some config info here--
http://blog.triumphovermadness.com/2010/05/ubuntu-1004-lts-on-hp-elitebook-8440p.html

I love mine -- battery life is not fab because and but it makes a
great portable workstation (4 core, etc).

Thanks for the info, but digging deeper into that page, it doesn't actually
list any models with the FreeDOS/Linux option.

For eg:

http://h10010.www1.hp.com/wwpc/nz/en/sm/WF25a/321957-321957-64295-3955549-3955549-4138624.html

So my question is, can you actually buy one without Windows loaded (and the
subsequent cost subtracted) here in NZ, and if so, who exactly is selling
them?

Also, $2,294 - the cheapest of the lot - doesn't seem like good value for
money, considering it's got only 2GB of RAM and Intel graphics.

Not entirely sure. It looks like Reed has found a reseller selling these
models.

I've only purchased consumer grade laptops so far. I assume the extra cost
is involved with aluminium chassis and so forth. Am interested from others
whether this assumption is correct.

insane prices.

I bought a decent dell laptop last year in the US for 800$

For that price you can almost buy a ticket to the US, buy a laptop,
stay the night, come home and still be ahead.

here is the plan:

fly to hawaii: 1465 NZD$
http://www.flightcentre.co.nz/product/Honolulu-1277512%22

HP - Pavilion Laptop / Intel® Core™ i5 Processor / 17.3" Display / 6GB
Memory / 640GB Hard Drive - Aluminum
850$ USD at best buy (a bit over 1k NZD)
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+-+Pavilion+Laptop+/+Intel%26%23174%3B+Core%26%23153%3B+i5+Processor+/+17.3%22+Display+/+6GB+Memory+/+640GB+Hard+Drive+-+Aluminum/1686237.p?id=1218279827833&skuId=1686237

total cost is a tad bit more than you spent but the laptop is nicer
and you get to go bar hopping in hawaii.

You forgot to factor in the price of bar hopping.

Ha! That'd be like having a dinner budget for buying a laptop. That
seriously can't be included in the cost of the laptop.... can it?

If my boss sent me on an overnight trip to pick up a laptop, it would
cost him the trip plus a meal allowance, as well as the laptop.

It's like postage&packaging or a handling fee.

...which adds a substantial chunk to the cost!

I think I'm coming round to getting one of these:

http://www.ascent.co.nz/productspecification.aspx?ItemID=392653

1.22kg of mini-nice. If I want a portable storage device, I'll
specifically get one. So an 80GB SSD would seem to give me the edge in
battery life.

The touchscreen is said to reduce the picture quality, so I'll skip
that. Not sure I want the one with 3G in it either 'cos I'd need a new
phone account and I bluetooth tether anyway.

Sliced bread never made any fuss about what spread I put on it or
which toaster it went into.

Stil... welcome to the list Jack :)
