Hi all,
I believe there was a debate on TV last night about software patents, but I
didn't get to see it.
Did anyone see it, and what happened?

Thanks,

Very brief on The Court Report on TVNZ7. I believe the programme
screens about 4 times a week plus is available on the online TVNZ
system.

Just a patent lawyer lauding patents and a software developer anti
them. Was only the last segment of the show (1/3 of the show
effectively).

Have it recorded on mythtv if you want to come round and watch it.

Wow! That was dismissive.

The software developer in question is Don Christie - former president
of NZOSS and co-founder of Catalyst as well as being on the council
for Internet NZ. He's one of those people who've done a crapload for
FLOSS in New Zealand along with Peter Harrison (founder of NZOSS),
Tabitha Roder (Education), Mark Foster (Administrator of this and a
bunch of other mailing lists), Tim McNamara (Disaster Response),
Fabiana Kubke (Open Data with a science emphasis).... And these are
just the ones I can think of right this very moment... I've missed a
bunch like Mark Osbourne and Nathan Parker (vocal supporters of Open
Source in an educational context). Definitely names to watch....

It's a pity there's no uncut version that I can find...

Sorry if I appeared dismissive. I happened to be spending a rare
moment watching livetc whilst snowed in yesterday and tcr was on, I
regularly record & watch it so was happy to see it pop up amongst the
shoppingtv on the other channels. I don't know either of the panelists
and am not on NZOSS, not from interest but more because I made a
decision a while ago not to put any more mailing lists in my inbox :)

What I meant by "just" in my post was this: the slot was too short to
do the subject justice. Each participant had little more time than to
very basically summarise their positions. The subject needs greater
debate than this, although I am not sure the public is interested
enough for Greg King, or any other media outlet, to give it much time.
I am not sure how much viewership tcr gets, I watch it because I am a
lawyer and find a lot of the subject matter interesting. Nice to see
the subject aired, but no new arguments for me. (patents
chooseone(promote|stifle) innovation)

I am against software patents, pity the "one click checkout" patent
didn't get some airtime, it epitomises the stupidity of software
patents.

It all just gave me an opportunity to get on a soapbox and drop a few names :)

I find TCR interesting as well even though I'm not a lawyer. A lot of
the subject matter is made accessible to the likes of me.

Of course, with TVNZ 7 closing next year.... There goes The Court
Report, Back Benches, Talk Talk, Media 7 and Hindsight... Never mind
the fact that TVNZ 7 got watered down when TVNZ 6 got changed to some
silly youth orientated (anti-Linux*) no content channel.

* I don't really know if it's anti Linux but I needed to find some way
of bringing this back to Linux in some way...

Hi Zarek,

This was filmed last week - you could have watched it live and been a
part of the audience if you followed NZOSS's OpenChat!

http://lists.nzoss.org.nz/pipermail/openchat/2011-July/008216.html

Anyways, you can watch it here: (jump to Chapter 3)
http://tvnz.co.nz/the-court-report/s2011-e21-video-4318856

Also watch: Critique of The Court Report, July 21, 2011

(Cheers to Don Christie and Peter Harrison for the links)

HTH

Regards,
Shiv
