Is there something anyone can think of that might solve this issue?

Whoops. Just realised the subject's completely wrong (must have been
thinking of something else at the time).

Yep - it has a switch attached but it still doesn't come up if no
other machines are on the wired network.

The VM is a dhcp server. The physical device a static (for quite
practical reasons).

The VM is a pfsense box - so traffic from the wireless and wan come
into the box but get passed straight to the pfsense box.
