Netbook Remix vs. Gnome

Hi Everyone,

I was wondering - does anyone know how Ubuntu have kept the Netbook
remix settings mostly separated from Gnome desktop settings? I'm
looking at doing up a different interface for the next release of
Ubuntu given that they're abandoning the netbook launcher in favour of
unity.

What do you mean by "settings"?

You can pick between them by choosing what interface you want on the login
screen, if that's what you mean.

Sort of - the fact that you can select which interface is what I'm
looking for. Where is this information stored? A user may select a
"session" which is stored in their .xsession file which dictates
which, traditionally window manager, but now days a configuration to a
window manager (i.e. the netbook remix is gnome with netbook-launcher
and maximus and a different layout for the panels (though I might be
wrong on this point).

So if I wanted to do something like have a OSX like desktop available
to all users, where would this be defined?

I've been having a bit more of a look at this.

In /usr/share/xsessions there's:
une.desktop
une-efl.desktop

These files are almost identical (which has me a tad confused - how do
they differentiate between 3d and 2d modes?!? The only difference
seems to be in the name and comment.)

The important bit seems to be this line:
X-Ubuntu-Gettext-Domain=une-session

If I'm understanding this right, Gettext-Domain has something to do
with translations - so this is the bit which would normally say which
language to use for things like /usr/share/applications/*.desktop
which define a bunch of translations in the one file.

Does anyone know what this line does? i.e. what interprets it?
